Cortana, the Microsoft’s virtual assistant, will make the leap from Windows Phone to Windows 10, when the new version of the Windows operating system will be available, on 29 July this year. But Cortana will not be limited to the Windows platform: we are also expecting it to arrive on iOS and Android.

As for the mobile OS from Google, Cortana is(was) already available, at least the beta release, and it was spotted on Play Store. Anyway, according to the first tests reported by users, this version seems to be stable enough to provide a satisfying experience.

Cortana allows you to ask vocal questions about the current weather, you can call someone from the contact list, create reminders, or answer simple questions. Unfortunately, the function “Hey Cortana” does not work. That is only available in the Windows version.

On Android, Cortana is supposed to officially be available for download when the Windows 10 will be released.

As we are approaching the mid of the year, summer is here, I thought it would be a really great idea to create a top with the best 5 less known smartphones of 2015, smartphones that are not necessarily expensive but they have that “je ne sais quoi” that attracts the eye (or the wallet). This list was inspired by one of the categories found on this smartphone shop. In each smartphone description I will try to share the reasons why I’ve included it in this list. So, here we go:

ASUS ZenFone 2 5.5-Inch 64 GB Smartphone

1. ASUS ZenFone 2 5.5-Inch 64 GB Smartphone

A premium smartphone with a design that looks like the LG G3 and many interesting features under the hood: the highlight is the 64-bit Intel 2.3GHz Quad Core processor with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. Right now, it is priced under $300.

Amazon Fire Phone

2. Amazon Fire Phone

I loved this smartphone because it is affordable, it features a 13 MP camera with optical image stabilization, HDR, and LED flash. Fire Phone is priced under $200.

Cat S50

3. Caterpillar Cat S50

Not everyone lives in the city. This smartphone is perfectly for people that love extreme sports, for people that are always on the go and for folks that are clumsy with their cellular phones. It features 4G LTE Military Grade + IP67 Quad-Core Smartphone and it has an appealing price of $430.

Huawei P8 4G

4. Huawei P8 4G

Welcome to the Big League. This smartphone captures perfectly the top Android experience with the Apple design. The features that got my attention are the 8-core processor clocked @ 2.0GHz, the 2600mAh battery and the 13MP main camera. Right now, the smartphone is priced around $700.

Letv Le Max

5. Letv Le Max

At this moment, I can say that The Best Is Yet to Come. This gem is definitely the top of my list, with a design that tops everything we have seen so far and features are truly appealing. This dual-sim cellular phone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Octa Core, it runs Android OS 5.0 operating system, it has a 6.33 inch IPS Screen that projects a 2560*1440 resolution with 464ppi. It is priced around $1,000.

Do you have any other suggestions for this list of Top 5 less known smartphones of 2015? Let me know in the comment section.

To tell you the truth,  I was really angry on the latest Android Lollipop update on my SGS5. It was laggy as hell, and every time I was using the Facebook Messenger app it freezed like I was typing from the North Pole. Also, the Touchwiz interface was a little dull to me,  so I decided to do something that I was waiting for a long, long time: to root my device and get a custom ROM. I knew that rooting my device will void the warranty,  but hey,  it will expire in April anyway. What’s one more month?

Before this, I had little experience with rooting Android smartphones. I’ve used this CM 12 tutorial and everything went smoothly. I had small problems installing the SuperSu app,  but hey,  the Internet is packed with information and I finally managed to find what I was needing in order to complete the process. It’s not that difficult once you get the hang of it.

Now,  let’s get to my conclusion on using the CM 12 on Samsung Galaxy S5 for one week.

The Camera
First, you should know that this build is not perfect, and there will be bugs and stripped-down changes. The most annoying was the one related to the camera,  a feature that’s really important to me. Sometimes, the camera fails to start in 3rd party apps like Camera360. Also,  the Touchwiz camera app was replaced with the default Android camera, which is more simple and has no features. So, right now, I’m missing many features from my old ROM, like the HDR mode or the stereo audio recording. 4k recording seems to work fine.

The speed / performance
There’s now way to compare CM12 with the stock ROM because the CM12 wins hands down. No doubt about it. It’s faster, it’s highly customizable and it will speed your device to 200%. No more problems with apps freezing when I’m using the keyboard…

The battery
I was really disappointed to see that the battery life is not that good with CM12. I haven’t made an accurate comparison,  but I will estimate that this CyanogenMod ROM is 30% less battery efficient than the Samsung’s custom ROM. I have checked on various forums, and other users reported the same poor battery performance. Right now I’m testing apps like Greenify that kill background tasks in the hope of getting more juice of that battery, but the conclusion remains: the CM12 eats more battery. Hopefully, a future release will fix this issue.

Special apps
If you were using the SHealth app, split screen window, air controls or the fingerprint scanner, this custom ROM is not for you, definitely! These apps and functions are nowhere to be found in the CM12 release. I guess you can install third party apps as an alternative, but I haven’t dug too deep into that.

Other things
Man, that light is killing me. I like to use my smartphone at night, and the old ROM knew the shut those capacitive button lights down. This ROM had them turned on by default,  and they’ve remained on as long I was touching the display. Like… Forever!  After trying various apps from the Store,  I learned that there’s actually a setting option in the control panel that switches off those annoying capacitive button lights. So,  if you fave the same issue, go to Settings –  Buttons –  Backlit and disable that option. Simple as that!

This is my one week experience review with the  Cyanogenmod 12 custom ROM. So far,  I haven’t decided if I should keep it or not, since I’m still trying to tweak it in order to fit my current needs. What I like about it though,  is the fact that it’s getting constant updates, so I am expecting a better performance in the next couple of months. If you have any questions about it or if you want to share your own CM12 experience with other users, just leave a comment below. Cheers.

Folks at Microsoft just released a technical preview for their upcoming Windows 10 Mobile OS. In the following video, you are about to see a detailed look of the new operating system, but you should bare in mind that the OS is far from finished. Microsoft is working really hard to make everything look great, since it is in a competition with fearful enemies like Android and iOS. Will the new iteration of Windows Mobile bring more fans? We’ll have to wait and see. So far, all I can say is that I love the way Win 10 mobile looks. How about you?

HTC One M9

HTC decided to launch their HTC One M9 on the same day with Samsung Galaxy S6, that’s March 1, 2015. GSMArena just released a list with all the unnoficial specifications and features of the M9.

The next flagship device from HTC’s camp will have a 5 inch IPS display with a full HD resolution. In the multimedia department, we find the 20.7MP camera with the dual-LED flash. There is no official information regarding the camera’s 4K capability, but many users (like me) are really hoping for this feature. The frontal camera based on UltraPixel technology and it has 4MP, probably the same camera that’s currently present on One M8. Selfie lovers are probably really happy right now.

The HTC One M9 Hima will also feature a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 quad-core Cortex-57(3) processor clocked at 2.0 GHz, and GPU Adreno 430 graphical interface. The smartphone will be available in 32GB and 64GB and it will run Android 5.0.2 Lollipop and Sense 7.0.

HTC M9 and HTC M9 Plus

The image above is presumptively coming directly from HTC camp and it depicts the One M9 and One M9 Plus. The LTE 6 technology is also present and it will allow the users to browser the Internet at speeds of 300 Mbps. According to various sources, the HTC One M9 Hima will have a 2.840 mAh battery, so we can expect a lot of working hours per charge.

HTC M9 release invitation

Just as Samsung teased their release with the line “find clarity in the dark“, HTC released invitation for the event called “Utopia in progress“. March 1 is going to be very interesting day, that’s for sure.

OnePlus-Two

Although OnePlus One literally came out of nowhere, it created a lot of buzz last year. The small manufacturer company from China managed to design an affordable smartphone with high-end specifications that broke the charts. Things will not stop here, since in 2015 the company will release its follower, the OnePlus Two.

According to GSMArena, OnePlus Two will feature the same 5.5 inch display, but the rezolution will get better: QHD. Also, the processor will be upgrade to Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bits and it will feature 4GB of RAM. The OnePlus Two‘s battery will have a capacity of 3300 mAh and it will run Android 5.0. According to the same source, OnePlus decided to adjust the price of this device, and it will cost $435 on most markets. Although it is higher than its predecessors, it’s still a cheap price compared to its competitors.

I hope they will build more smartphones and we’ll be able to get our hands on this device without an invitation.

LG G FLex 2
If you loved the first LG G Flex then you are in for a treat. LG is getting ready to announce the next smartphone in the series, the LG G Flex 2. This smartphone should be the second curved screen smartphone designed by the manufacturer. The LG G Flex 2 will probably be introduced at CES 2015 technology trade show that begins in Las Vegas, on January 6.

The new LG G Flex 2 would feature the 810 Snapdragon chip, a 64-bit processor and LTE-A technology. I have encountered this information on a Korean website, which does not confirm the previous rumors that are talking about a smartphone with a smaller screen than the previous model. The first G Flex received the 6 inch – 720p display, and the rumors say that the G Flex 2 model will come with a 5 or 5.5 inch display and 1080p rezolution.

LG G Flex 2 will also feature a case that will be self-repairing. Many users are waiting for a device that will not only feature a curved display, but also a display that will be able to fold according to user’s needs. Maybe folks at LG have worked on this problem.

We’ll have to see more about this device at CES Las Vegas 2015m which is only days away.
